According to Prof. Ponpon, in principle, the selection this year is the same as the previous year. Only in this year, the tests conducted are more standardized and measured in its materials.

“In the last year, participants may attach a certificate of English test and learning ability test or academic potential test from institutions anywhere, but this year is not because Unpad creates its own material tests,” Prof. Ponpon explained. The TKBI is made by the Faculty of Literature and TKB is created by Unpad Psychometric Team.

In regard to the interview stage, Prof. Ponpon explained that the test is carried out by each program study. In the interview, the participants will be given questions related to academic issues, financial and time availability. “Many of the people who register for the S-2 and S-3 are already have job. Do not because of the rush of work, thus dormant the course. Therefore, we need to ask the availability of tis time to the participants. If the participants are too busy, it is better to give the oppurtunity to other participants who have the time to study,” Prof. Ponpon explained.

For the test implementation later, Prof. Ponpon urges the participants to prepare themselves well, find out the location before the test and come on time. “The Committee will not provide tolerance to the participants who come late,” Prof. Ponpon firmed. He also added, when there is a participant has not the participant card, he/she is expected to bring a PIN and barcode as proof of PIN purchase to the SMUP officials to follow the test. “As long as taking the PIN and barcode, officers will serve participants who do not have the participant card,” Prof. Ponpon explained.

The Rising of SMUP Applicants
S3 SMUP Coordinator, Dr. Ir. Tb. Benito A. Kurniani., Dipl. Est., said that the number of participants this time has increased almost twofold in comparation to last year. For S-2 and S-3 Programs. In years of 2008 ago, only about 800 people the S-2 and S-3 who registered. Meanwhile, this year, up to date of 16th May 2009, recorded the PIN purchase is 1,181 person for the S-2, and 447 person for the S-3.

Chairman of 2009 SMUP Prof. Dr. H. Ponpon S. Idjradinata, dr., Sp.AK. explained that the increase in the number of SMUP participants for S-2 and S-3 is due to the registration that starting this year is conducted online. With this online system, the information spreads more quickly and thus can be accessed anywhere. “This eases the applicants from outside Bandung to obtain information and register from their local area without the need to go to Bandung,” Prof. Ponpon said.

So far, he added that with the online registration, the data collected is expected to be more complete and faster. Currently, according to Prof. Ponpon what become obstacles in the implementation of the program SMUP especially for S-2 and S-3 are more technical obstacles. The biggest obstacle is the number of participants who have not completed the administrative papers until now. Although the SMUP committee always spread the information via the website. In conducting this test, Faculty of Letters preparing 1010 seats divided in 21 rooms. Rooms were managed into two sectors which are sector B and sector C. Each sector was led by a Sector Coordinator. In each session the test was monitored by 52 supervisors with the ratio of the 20 participants monitored by 1 supervisor. Total supervisors worked were 104 people.

In the process of execution, it does not appear to have a constraint which means that, except for participants who come late and do not have the test participant card or. In efforts to anticipate this, the parties of Faculty of Literature and SMUP have prepared a services table of card printing and the spare room (emergency class) which is the Hall of Center for Japanese Studies.
